چکیده

Microplastics are plastic particles less than 5 mm in diameter. These plastics mostly result from degradation of larger plastics. Due to their small size, they often accidentally ingested by sea faunas, particularly the deposit and filter feeders. However, information on ingestion microplastics fauna such as jellyfish is rare. This paper provides evidence jelly fishes (Crambionella orsini) along Kenyan Coast. Samples were taken three stations (Mikindani Makupa Mombasa, Dabaso Mida Creek) between 31st January 2018 3rd February using tow nets. digested 10 % KOH at 60 °C for 24 hrs sieved through a 38 µm sieve. Products below filtered 0.8 Whatman filters, then dried an oven viewed under dissecting microscope microplastics. Suspected confirmed hot needle test. obtained mainly fibres different colours: black, blue, green, colourless, purple, red yellow. Colourless majority accounting 53 total number while purple least only 1 %. Mean concentration was highest (0.05 mp/g tissue), whereas Mikindani almost equal (i.e., 0.03 ± 0.003 Mikindani, 0.01 Makupa). Statistically, means not significantly (F1, 2 = 1.34; P 0.43). study presents contamination coastal waters jellyfish. Results this will help reinforce ban country prevent further accumulation environment.

Microplastics profile along the Rhine River

Microplastics result from fragmentation of plastic debris or are released to the environment as pre-production pellets or components of consumer and industrial products. In the oceans, they contribute to the 'great garbage patches'. They are ingested by many organisms, from protozoa to baleen whales, and pose a threat to the aquatic fauna. Although as much as 80% of marine debris originates fro...

Spatial distribution and habitat characterisation of Anopheles larvae along the Kenyan coast.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES A study was conducted to characterise larval habitats and to determine spatial heterogeneity of the Anopheles mosquito larvae. The study was conducted from May to June 1999 in nine villages along the Kenyan coast. METHODS Aquatic habitats were sampled by use of standard dipping technique. The habitats were characterised based on size, pH, distance to the nearest house,...

Blood-meal analysis for anopheline mosquitoes sampled along the Kenyan coast.

A total of 1,480 Anopheles gambiae sensu lato and 439 An. funestus, collected from 30 sites along the Kenyan coast, were tested by direct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for blood-meal identification. Overall, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) identified 92 and 87% of the samples tested in An. gambiae s.l. and An. funestus, respectively. Of these, human IgG was detected in...

The presence of microplastics in commercial salts from different countries

The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in saltwater bodies is relatively well studied, but nothing is known about their presence in most of the commercial salts that are widely consumed by humans across the globe. Here, we extracted MP-like particles larger than 149 μm from 17 salt brands originating from 8 different countries followed by the identification of their polymer composition using mic...
